Under Settings → Custom fields, an admin can add their own categories and fields beyond the built-in employment data (Department, Manager, Location, …) — for example a "Key tag", "Bike benefit", or other organization-specific data. Each category has a name and an icon; each field within a category has a name, a type (text, number, date, a list of selectable options, yes/no, or file), and whether it's required. Fields appear in the employee edit dialog, grouped by category.

Deleting a category or field does not erase previously saved values on employees — they simply stop being shown in the interface.

**Restrict who can view or edit a sensitive field.** When the Field-level permissions feature is enabled for your organization, the field's edit dialog gains an extra section: "Restrict visibility". You can independently restrict which roles may **view** the field's value and which may **edit** it — check one or more roles (Employee or a custom role) in each list. Leaving both lists unchecked keeps the field working exactly as it does today: visible and editable to everyone with access to employee data. Admins always see and can always edit every field regardless of this setting — otherwise an admin could lock themselves out of their own configuration. A field with an active restriction is marked with a "Restricted" badge in the field list.
