A Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is a structured action plan for an employee whose performance needs to improve — including support for e-signature/acknowledgment, automated email reminders, and scheduled check-ins.

A plan holds: which employee it's for, a reason/description of why the plan was started, a start date and a target end date, a list of goals/action items (each with a description, a target date, and a status: not started/in progress/done), and an overall status for the plan itself: Draft, Active, Completed, or Cancelled.

When the feature is enabled for your organization, you see "My improvement plans" — your own plan(s), if you have any, always visible to you regardless of role. If you hold manager-tier access (Admin, or a custom role granted PIP access), you also see "Team improvement plans": a list of plans for employees in your scope, a button to create a new plan, and the ability to open a plan to update its status and goals.

A manager may only create/manage plans for employees within their own org-tree subtree or their direct/indirect reports — the same scope any such delegated access already grants for other employee data. An Admin may manage plans for anyone in the organization.

**Important:** unlike The Keepers Test (which is NEVER shown to the assessed employee), a PIP is something the employee should always be able to see about themselves — it's a documented conversation about their own performance, after all. Setting a plan's status to "Cancelled" is permanent and requires confirmation before it's saved.

A plan still in "Draft" status can also be permanently deleted (the "Delete" button, with a confirmation before it goes through). This is only possible for a draft — a plan that's already Active, Completed, or Cancelled cannot be permanently deleted, since it may carry real HR/legal value as a record; use "Cancelled" to mark that such a plan is no longer in effect.

A manager can record ongoing "check-ins" against a plan: a free-text note on how things are going, timestamped and attributed to whoever wrote it. Each check-in also saves a snapshot of the goals' statuses at that moment, so the history shows what was true THEN even if the goals are edited afterward. Check-ins are shown newest-first in the plan's detail view.

An Admin (or an unrestricted, org-wide grant — not one confined to a specific team) also sees the "PIP overview" tab under Performance ▸ Overview: an org-wide aggregate of total plan count, status distribution (Draft/Active/Completed/Cancelled), a per-department breakdown, and the average number of days to resolution for completed plans. This overview never shows an individual plan's content (reason/goals) — counts only. A manager whose access is scoped to their own team does NOT see this org-wide view, for the same reason they never see another team's employee data.
