Under Settings → Departments & teams, an admin sets up the organisation's structure. The feature is enabled per organization and is off by default.

**Departments** are the large, hierarchical org units — for example Marketing, with the subdepartment Performance Marketing. Departments are always set up, and every employee belongs to exactly one (sub)department. This hierarchy is the same tree that data scoping (what a manager sees), analytics, salary revisions and surveys all key off, so it is what drives how data is grouped and filtered. You can add a department or subdepartment, rename it, move a whole subtree under a different parent, and delete it.

**Teams** are smaller, flexible groups that can span several departments — for example "Product Launch A" with the subteam "Customer-facing". Teams are optional and intended for matrix organisations. An employee can belong to several teams in addition to their department. Teams are managed exactly like departments (add, rename, move, delete).

**Offices** work just like departments — for example Stockholm HQ with the suboffice Floor 3. Offices are optional (unlike department, an employee is not required to have one) and are meant to record where someone physically sits, independent of their department or team. Offices are managed exactly like departments and teams (add, rename, move, delete), and show up as their own selectable dropdown on the employee's profile.

**Delete is guarded.** A department, team or office cannot be deleted while it still has sub-items or employees assigned to it — the system blocks the deletion and asks you to move or reassign first. Renaming or moving an item automatically rewrites the whole subtree's paths; the item's id never changes, so its links to employees and analytics are preserved.

**Leads.** A department or team can have up to 3 leads — employees who lead that unit. Click the badge icon next to a department or team to pick leads from the org's employee roster (search by name or email). Leads are not available for offices. Chosen leads show up by name on the matching unit's card in the org chart (View → Arrange by → Departments/Teams).
