Org chart

Org chart

The org chart in the Organization menu shows your reporting lines as a horizontal, top-down tree — one box per person (a small initials avatar, bold name, role/department below) linked by connector lines to their direct reports — built entirely from the “Manager” (MANAGER) field already stored on every employee. No new data entry or configuration is needed.

Each box shows name, role and department, and can be collapsed/expanded via a small round button below the box if the person has direct reports. A manager’s box also shows a small badge in its bottom-right corner: “X/Y” — X is their direct-report count, Y is their whole team counted transitively (an employee with no reports shows no badge). A wide tree scrolls horizontally rather than squeezing together. A summary at the top shows the total number of employees shown, plus a note if someone’s manager isn’t shown in your current view (e.g. if you’re a manager viewing your own subtree — your own manager sits above what you have access to).

If you have permission to edit employees (Admin/manager), clicking a person’s row opens the same “Edit employee” card used on the employee list — it opens the regular edit screen.

Change a reporting line by drag-and-drop (People view): in the People view, you can drag a person’s card and drop it onto another person’s card to make that person their new manager. A confirmation dialog appears before the change is saved (“Change so that X reports to Y?”). The change saves immediately and is governed by the exact same permission that already controls what you can edit on the employee list — you can only move a person you already have edit access to, and only onto a new manager within your own access. A change that would create a cycle (e.g. making someone’s own report their manager) or set a person as their own manager is automatically rejected.

What you see depends on your role, same as the employee list:

  • An Admin sees the whole organization.
  • A manager (a role with the reporting-line access area) sees their own subtree (their direct and indirect reports).
  • Employee sees their own reporting chain: you, your manager, your manager’s manager and so on up to the top (your own row is marked “You”), plus any direct reports you may have. The chain shows only each person’s name, role and department — never email, salary, salary band or sensitive fields. It does not show lateral peers or other parts of the organization, and is limited to a reasonable number of levels.

A restricted custom field (configured by an Admin) never appears in the org chart.

Arrange by (Admin/manager): at the top of the view is a four-way switcher — People (the view above), Departments, Teams and Offices. Departments is built from your department structure (the same tree the department filter and Settings → Departments & Teams manage); Teams and Offices only appear once that feature (the same setting gates both) is turned on and you’ve set up at least one team or office, respectively. In every unit mode, each card shows the unit’s name, its direct-member count, its total-member count (including every sub-unit, counted recursively), and its number of sub-units — cards collapse/expand exactly like the People tree. The switcher does not appear for the Employee role (their own view lacks the data needed to count department/team/office membership correctly). Once a department or team has leads assigned (Settings → Departments & Teams), their names show up on the unit’s card — up to 3 per unit. Offices don’t have leads.

Right-click menu (People): right-click an employee’s row in the People view to open a small menu with three actions — copy that person’s email address, copy the email addresses of everyone who reports to them directly or indirectly (recursively, the whole subtree), or download a PNG card with their name, role and department. The menu closes when you click elsewhere or press Escape. It’s only available on People cards — not on Department/Team/Office cards, since those don’t represent a single person.

Compact view and floating cards (People view): an employee with no manager AND no direct reports (e.g. a broken/missing manager link) shows up in its own “Not part of a reporting line” section pinned above the real hierarchies below — otherwise they’d look just as prominent as a CEO with hundreds of reports. A manager with a very large team (more than 8 direct reports) can get hard to scan; toggle “Compact view” above the tree to condense such a team into a “+N more” pill, which you click to reveal everyone again for that one manager. The setting is saved in your browser (not per account or organisation) and only applies to the People view.

Filter by legal entity: if the “Legal entities” feature (Settings → Legal entities) is turned on, a filter dropdown appears next to “Arrange by” letting you narrow the chart to a single legal entity — the chart then shows only employees assigned to that entity (set on an employee’s edit card, the “Legal entity” field). The filter applies no matter which arrangement you’re viewing (People/Departments/Teams/Offices); choose “All legal entities” to go back to the full view.
